Temple Sholom is a Progressive, Inclusive Conservative Congregation that has become a home to all Jews in the South Florida community that want a place to worship and increase their Jewish education and identity. Temple Sholom provides a stable house of worship where the prayers are familiar, people are friendly and feels like home.
The history of Temple Sholom is closely intertwined with the history of its community. The organized Jewish presence in Pompano Beach began in 1945. Although Jewish families lived throughout Broward County, there was no Conservative synagogue north of Dade County – and Miami was a long, inconvenient drive before expressways existed. The local Jewish population was small, yet there was a clear need for religious education, life-cycle events, and opportunities for social connection. At the same time, anti-Semitism remained overt, and memories of the Nazi atrocities were still vivid within Pompano’s Jewish community.
By 1960, Pompano Beach had expanded, and many more Jewish families settled in the area. The Temple’s membership grew to include both young families and retirees. A vibrant social calendar and a thriving religious school contributed to the Temple’s success. The membership committee developed plans to welcome the many new Jewish families moving into the community in an effort to strengthen and expand the congregation.
